The new President-Elect meets with the new Vice President immediately following the closing ceremonies of the convention to turn over any information that may assist the new Vice President. The President-Elect serves as an adviser to new Vice President on future duties, especially those pertaining to the procedures for the nomination of new members. In the event of absence or disability, the President-Elect will assume the duties of the President. During business meetings, the President-Elect sits at the head table with the other officers.
The President-Elect is a member of the ABA Foundation Board (ex-officio member), which meets annually at the convention a day before the convention begins, usually Wednesday morning.

New Member Introductions at the Annual Convention
The President-Elect, as the former Vice President, should have the names and contact information of those who were most recently invited for membership and who will be introduced at the next annual convention. It is the responsibility of the President-Elect to coordinate the new member introductions at the convention by contacting the principal sponsor of each new member prior to the convention. In correspondence with the sponsor, the President-Elect should make clear that the new member and their spouse or partner are generally included in the introduction and that remarks must not exceed two minutes for both the Principal Sponsor’s introduction and the new member’s comments. While this is a very important part of the convention, time is simply limited.
The President-Elect will notify the President of the new members who will be present at the convention, the days they will be at the convention, who will introduce each new member, and what will be the order of their introduction. Short introductions and short acceptance remarks are mandatory!
The President-Elect is an understudy to the President and should take notes on general procedures during various meetings. These notes may guide future convention agenda when the President-Elect becomes President.
Annual Convention – Reading of the Regrets
The President-Elect reads regrets from members who sent letters as to why they cannot attend the convention. Letters from Past Presidents are always read; the names of those members who wrote letters can be read without reading their letters. Regrets are forwarded to the President-Elect by the Secretary-Treasurer.
Assignment of new Committee Members
The President-Elect is responsible for selecting members to serve on the various committees for the coming year, which is their year as President. This work is done coming into the annual convention and should be completed by two weeks after the convention when the President-Elect is now President. The selection of committees and the verification that those members selected will be able to serve in an ongoing activity should reflect the mission of the existing committees. Committee selections should be made while current committees are functioning. A majority of the membership of each committee must change annually in order to provide all members the privilege of serving.
The committee assignments should be completed and announced within two weeks of the close of the annual convention. Committee assignments are published on the ABA website, and when ready, the new President will send an email to the membership through the Secretary-Treasurer announcing the new committees for the next year.
Outgoing Ceremonies/Assuming the New Office of President
During the closing ceremonies, the outgoing President will relinquish the gavel to the new President. The Chairman of the Board (Immediate Past President), or a Past President of the President’s choosing, presents the outgoing President with a Past President Plaque and President Pin. These items are brought to the convention by the Secretary-Treasurer. The agenda for the new President is as follows:
- New President’s remarks.
- Remind committee members of their responsibilities and that committees will be posted within the week on the ABA website.
- Make any announcements of excursions or banquet items (if needed).
- Adjournment.
